Not Knowing the Meaning of Words: Magic Negro Edition

Via HuffPost:

CALLER: It’s just like the LA Times said last year, or two years ago — he is the magic Negro.

[MICHAEL] STEELE: Yeah he is — [laughter]. You read that too, huh?

CALLER: Oh yeah. I read that too. And even when things go wrong, he still manages to come out smelling like a rose.

STEELE: Well, yeah. And it’s because he’s getting unprecedented coverage — cover — by the media.

The caller & Steele’s banter makes clear they think a magic negro is someone who is a teflon media darling and can’t be criticized because he’s black. And/or because white liberals want to have a black friend to be cool.

When in reality, a magic negro is (h/t Wiki):

a supporting, often mystical stock character in fiction who, by use of special insight or powers, helps the white protagonist get out of trouble.

Hmm…a black dude with special insight/charisma who comes out of nowhere and fixes white people’s problems?  No, nothing like Obama there.

The folks calling Obama a magic negro–and laughing their (I’m presuming) white asses off listening to the Barack the Magic Negro Song on say Rush’s show–might want to consider the joke is on them since they are in fact proclaiming the very thing (the quasi-mystical powers of Obama) they are criticizing in others.

Project much?

This ‘that word doesn’t mean what you think it means’ conservative syndrome is apparently going around today.

Yeah, Obama’s’ fixin’ white folks’ problems! Yoo dude!
I wish he’d done some fixin’ back when the Fanny May/Freddie Mac scandal hit the Senate. Alas…

Fantastic. The hits just keep on coming.

Interesting phenomenon, this “that word doesn’t mean what it means conservative syndrome”,

The most prominent example of this, I think, is why Obama is called “The Messiah”. It’s a mean-spirited attempt to imply that liberals worship him. On it’s face this makes no sense; left-wing critics have been attacking him on a variety of issues very early in his presidency.

But taken from another angle it makes much more sense. Many on the left have a legitimate belief that we’re in the end-times, which will proceed exactly as their interpretation of the Book of Revelation. Obama is the president, and a relatively popular one at that…

The hidden message when he is sarcastically called “The Messiah”, in my humble opinion, is that he really is, in fact, the Anti-Christ.

E.D. you guys are in a world of hurt…the conservative flirtation with the neo-nazis and white supremicists continues apace at the Secular Right blog.
Derbyshire has gone insane.

Matoko,

Let me see if I got this right. Derbyshire writes a post (which I think is pretty bunk btw), some wackjob far right nutter posts a comment. By my brief look said nutter enters the conversation at like comment #87 in an already pretty hot flame war thread and you’re calling out Razib? I believe the kids say WTF.

Let me take a wild guess and predict Razib doesn’t support far-right fascist (pseudo)science whatever his personal views on gay marriage (I don’t know what his take on that topic is).

I think Derbyshire has always been insane so this latest version of JB off the rails by my lights is only par for the course (to mix 3 metaphors).

And why is ED part of “you guys?” He’s in favor of gay marriage. Double WTF?

10 matoko_chan { 05.03.09 at 6:13 am }

Razib (as David Hume) is part of the whole “dive to the right” phenomenon– as the GOP moves farther right Glenn Beck becomes mainstream and Troost and Alex Jones become merely slightly off, rather than fringe whackjobs.
In my days as a co-blogger at GNXP Razib was fierce in running off the Stormfronters that attemped to frequent Gene Expression. He was merciless with the banhammer.
Now Razib is in Glenn Beck’s cohort.
Razib is especially hypocritical in trying to justify a secular conservative position for opposing SSM by invoking traditionalism, ignoring the fact that “traditional wisdom” would mandate retaining creationism and IDT, since that is traditional, mainstream and majority american belief. Both Razib and Heather have warned of the “dangers” of SSM…..but there is simply NO SECULAR REASON to oppose SSM. The Secular Right is a lie.
The embrace of sketchy right wing extreme groups is only getting airtime on Charles Johnson’s site. I think it is pretty dangerous.
Mostly, the enemy of your enemy is still your enemy.

“And why is ED part of “you guys?” He’s in favor of gay marriage. Double WTF?”

I consider ED to be part of the conservative intelligentsia.
Correct meh if I’m wrong.

IPOF, I am banned at Secular Right while Dr. Troost is welcome to post.
I have a bad habit of pointing out those sort of deep crevasses in their “ideology”.

13 Cascadian { 05.03.09 at 6:24 am }

matoka: If E.D. is part of the conservative intelligentsia you have a problem with, you need to cut down on the kool-aid.

14 matoko_chan { 05.03.09 at 6:54 am }

Cascadian, you are drinking teh Kool-aid if you cannot acknowledge that there are two wholly separate cohorts of the conservative intelligentsia, diametrically opposed on torture, Palin, Rush, Beck, Joe the Plumber, SSM, and various other topics. The fracture started with Palin, and she is still is a good litmus test.
The single place where there seems to a shard of congruence between the two groups is third trimester abortions.

Hehe….someone should write a post……its like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hide.
