To carry on in the comments here a bit.

Freddie, to say that Friedman’s demarcation of an information economy is just a buzzword that is only useful if you happen to be Thomas Friedman is akin to saying that “localist” is just a buzzword for dissident conservatives that only has any meaning if you happen to be Patrick Deneen or Rod Dreher or Daniel Larison.

Just because the term/concept doesn’t currently apply to or have a tonne of meaning for a broad swath of the population, doesn’t mean that it is devoid of value and ought to be swept under the rhetorical rug.
