My Questions for the Seasteading Road Trip

Will Wilson is embarking on what sounds like the coolest road trip ever: a visit to a convention of libertarian seasteaders intent on seceding from the mainland United States. He’s also soliciting questions from readers; mine are below the fold.

1) What’s the social make-up of prospective seasteders? (I know this isn’t aimed at the convention-goers per se, but I’m curious) My guess is they’re either very successful or completely alienated from polite society, if only because you’d have to be very self-assured or completely crazy to envision a successful seasteading experiment.

2) What level of privation are the first generation of seasteders willing to endure to make their experiment a success? I suppose we won’t know how difficult seasteading is until someone actually tries it, but I’d be interested to hear what the seasteders have to say about their commitment to the cause.

1) 90% are White, Male, and have self-diagnosed Aspberger’s Syndrome.

Depends what you mean by prospective. The people most interested in being the first pioneers are young libertarian males. Us elder folk have more attachment to land, and it will take a larger community to entice us.

In terms of Ephemerisle attendance: Burning Man goers, libertarians, sailors, friends and friends of friends, people who want to be there to see a new festival and social phenomenon founded…
