Rugby and Aussie-rules players (and oddballs like Peter Cech) wear these when they're healing from a head injury (or they're just oddballs). They're something like kevlar and padding. Enough to protect against lacerations and minor bumps, but not enough to encourage players to turn their heads into missiles, like in modern football.
